Uncharted Waters: The Hold Steady

0comments
The new album might be a bit rocking for regular rotation on MVY, but we wanted to share a bit more of the new Hold Steady record "Teeth Dreams."  So it's featured on Friday night's Uncharted Waters, as PJ fills in for the vacationing Barbara.

Plus you'll hear new tracks from Sarah McLachlan, Strand Of Oaks and The HiMMS.

Uncharted Waters: Boy

Don't let the mustaches in the picture below fool you, Velaska Steiner and Sonja Glass are decidedly female, even if they are collective know as Boy.  The Swiss/German duo are also decidedly tuneful, clever and very much in musical sync with each other.  Tonight on Uncharted Waters, they are the featured artist, so you'll hear several songs from their album "Mutual Friends."

Also on the program, new tracks from John Mayer, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Mavis Staples and Gogol Bordello.  PJ Finn fills in for the vacationing Barbara Dacey, Friday at 9pm ET.  Then find the show in the Uncharted Waters archives.

Story: The Civil Wars

Tuesday June 11th, The Civil Wars release the long-awaited follow-up we thought might not happen.  For the past many months, the artists have been mum about their future, but "The Civil Wars" (the new, self-titled album) will go a long way to satiate the fans who have longed for their return.

You can see Joy and John Paul in happier times, flanking Barbara Dacey in the picture below from our galleries.  And you can hear a performance and an interview from our Newport Folk 2011 archives.

Uncharted Waters: Cayucas

Cayucas is a band and a song by the band.  But it's also a place in Southern California.  Hear more about it in the video below.  And you'll hear that vintage SoCal sound in their album "Bigfoot."  It's a record that the mvy staff is really excited about.

Listen to Uncharted Waters on Friday at 9pm, as Barbara Dacey features tracks from the Cayucas record, as well as other releases from this week.

Uncharted Waters: Aoife O'Donovan

". . . mostly just me."

That's how Aoife O'Donovan describes her music in the video below, but also talks about the great players and stylistic influences that make up her solo record "Fossils."

Barbara Dacey will feature several tracks of this record, as part of Uncharted Waters, Friday at 9pm ET and in the archives.

For more Aoife, head into the archives where we have 9 different sets from her former band Crooked Still and a really wild set from Merlefest that includes almost all the member of Crooked Still, The Duhks, The Infamous Stringdusters and Uncle Earl.

The MVY Music Hour on WCAI

0comments
We've very excited about a new collaboration with our friends across Vineyard Sound at WCAI.

They've invited us to produce a monthly program for them called "The MVY Music Hour" hosted by Barbara Dacey, which will air on the last Sunday of every month at 9pm.  You can hear it on 90.1 in the Falmouth or on The Vineyard, or through the WCAI website.

The debut episode features an interview from the mvyradio archives with Mary Steenbergen.  You may know her mainly as an actor, but you'll be amazed to hear what an accomplished songwriter and collaborator she is.  The episode also includes a new interview with the Island's own Mike Benjamin, who is one of Mary's collaborators.

Listen in, this Sunday at 9pm on WCAI.

The Lunch Hour: The Eagles

Barbara Dacey had a chance to watch "The History Of The Eagles" documentary, and it left her inspired to revisit some of their music.

Check out today's Lunch Hour, for an Essential mvy on The Eagles.  And see the trailer for the documentary below.

And while we're talking about The Eagles, check out this surprising cover of "Peaceful Easy Feeling" that Brett Dennen performed for the mvyradio Archives.

Serena Ryder's new song "Stompa" is making great waves.

You can hear the full Serena Ryder interview from 2007 at SXSW by clicking through.
