Will it be the next "O Brother Where Art Thou?"

The players are the same:  Joel Coen, Ethan Coen and T Bone Burnett.

Add in Marcus Mumford and Justin Timberlake, as well as a raft of 60s folk nuggets, and something's happening here.

The soundtrack to "Inside Llewyn Davis" is featured on this week's Uncharted Waters, along with new cuts from Bonnie Raitt, Vienna Teng, Houndmouth, The Devil Makes 3 and Los Lobos.

Movie: The Other Side Of The Ice

0comments
We hope you can join us next Wednesday, for a special film presentation, which will benefit Friends of mvyradio.

You may remember that in the summer of 2009, we were following the travels of Sprague Theobald, a Newport-based documentarian, as he and his crew navigated the Northwest Passage.  His film is now complete, and will screen on Martha's Vineyard.

In 2009, Sprague Theobald and his family set sail for the infamous Northwest Passage, the Arctic sea route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. Since 1906 a staggering number have died trying. From Newport, RI, through the Arctic and down to Seattle, it would be a five month, 8500 mile trek filled with deadly danger from ice and severe weather. Theobald created a film about his experience and has also written a book – both titled “The Other Side of the Ice”.

Come see this incredible film on Wednesday, September 25th at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center – part of the proceeds will benefit Friends Of mvyradio! Doors will open at 6:45 for the 7:30 screening with a book signing before the film and a Q&A after with the author and filmmaker.

For more information, visit the MV Film Center website.

AOW: Mavis Staples

"Pops told me 'Mavis, sing from your heart.'"

And Mavis Staples has done nothing but.  In her 2nd collaboration with producer Jeff Tweedy, she revisits many spiritual songs she'd originally sung with her family band, and Jeff Tweedy pens a handful of originals.  Iconic, and yet welcoming and even embracing, Mavis Staples is still capable of leading a march of people, together.

Watch the video below for a look at Mavis' late career resurgence, and be inspired.

Brett Dennen arrived with his first album as a singer-songwriter-strummer, and has since evolved into a bit of a pop-craftsman, while still retaining his observant, folk-singer's lyrical voice.  He keeps things accessible on the new "Wild Child."

There is a ton of great Brett Dennen stuff in the mvyradio archives, including a video interview below.
